Odyssey of the Mind begins in River Edge!
For the first time, River Edge will be participating in the Odyssey of the Mind competition. There will be one team at each school in 2016-2017. Students in any CREATE class are eligible to participate, however team size is limited to 7 people.
Odyssey of the Mind is an international competition, which had its origins right here in New Jersey at Rowan University. The competitions begin with regionals, then states and finally worlds. The top teams at each level advance.

Odyssey of the Mind challenges students to think creatively to problem solve and work together in a team environment. There are both long term and spontaneous problems. The long term problems are published at the beginning of the season and teams get to choose which problem they'd like to solve. This work often takes months of brainstorming, planning, building and finally performing. At the competition, each team gets 8 minutes to perform their solution, including set up, in a 20 x 20 ft. space. Teams must adhere to the rules and stipulations published in each problem definition and they can earn style points for specific aspects of their solution (script, costumes, special features). The emphasis is not solely on whether a solution worked, but also on the originality and thought behind the design.
The spontaneous problems each year are just that - unknown to the teams prior to them walking in the door that day for their time slot. They can be verbal only, hands on, or verbal & hands on problems. Teams practice spontaneous type problems all year, looking to improve their creativity and ability to think on their feet and work well together. The time limits are short, usually 1-2 minutes of thinking time, and then 6-10 minutes to actually solve and build their solution. Hands-on problems often have props and materials that the students must use to build their solution. Verbal only problems could involve having the students respond to a prompt, fill in a sentence, or tell a story based on certain words, locations or themes. The verbal and hands on combine the two - telling stories using props, for example. More points are awarded for creative responses, good teamwork during the problem and originality of the solution.
Odyssey of the Mind encourages fun and teamwork and emphasizes the effort put into a problem, not just the success of the solution at the competition.
